A first-generation coffee farmer, Norvey took on his 3 hectare farm El Mirador in 2004. El Mirador is situated at 1,900 masl, with 10,000 trees of Caturra and Catuai varieties. Norvey is a member of the Coocentral cooperative, the primary cooperative in central Huila, through a smallholder initiative aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of producers and the quality of their coffees. This initiative involves investments in technical support, ongoing guidance, and training for growers.
For this coffee, harvesting is done manually, followed by floatation in tanks. The beans are fermented for 48 hours in bags, then dried. El Mirador employs 1 permanent and 6 seasonal workers, with the main harvest being between October and November, with the mitaca harvest in May and June.
Seasonal buying is about seeing coffee as a crop not a commodity, buying in harmony with the growing seasons to enjoy coffee at its best. This kind of buying has always been the backbone of our business and it’s something we’ve improved and refined every year.
