Buhweju Hills Buhweju Hills

The Buhweju Hills are located in the Rwenzori Mountains of western Uganda, boardering the Democratic Republic of Congo. Often called the ‘Mountains of the Moon’ for their snow-capped peaks, the mountains are known for their dramatic landscapes, rich volcanic soils and diverse microclimates - from flat, fertile valleys to waterfalls and steep, misty rainforest slopes. In the local Rukonjo language, rwenzori means ‘rainmaker,’ a fitting name for its unique growing conditions.

The Lunar Coffee Washing Station, in the Kasese District, was established in 2021 by Long Miles Coffee. With a mission to produce Uganda’s finest Arabica coffee, the station also aims to create meaningful impact and support for the communities that produce it. They have partnered with a local cooperative union, and employ a full time team of junior agronomists to ensure maximum quality and yield for each farming family. Working primarily with SL28 and SL14 varietals, the station sources cherries from up to 3,500 smallholder farmers cultivating tiny plots at elevations between 1,600 and 1,800 masl. Many of these farmers produce less than a single sack of coffee per harvest. Their collective efforts result in coffees that are distinct, fruity and deeply rooted in place.
