This coffee is comprised of microlots grown across the remote mountainous area of Ywangan, southern Shan state, Myanmar, and is produced by Mandalay Coffee Group. The smallholder farmers are predominantly from Danu and Pa-O hill tribes, working between 0.25 and 3 acres of land. Coffee is intercropped with avocados, jackfruit, papaya and macadamia nuts.
Mandalay Coffee Group was formed in 2014 and is owned by local citizens, many of whom have been involved in the coffee industry for over 30 years. Their goal is to increase the income of coffee farmers in the area. Despite the widespread political turmoil and fighting in Myanmar, the coffee industry is enabling sustainable livelihoods and investment in infrastructure and healthcare.
Seasonal buying is about seeing coffee as a crop not a commodity, buying in harmony with the growing seasons to enjoy coffee at its best. This kind of buying has always been the backbone of our business and it’s something we’ve improved and refined every year.
